Description
Zylexx SR contains Bupropion HCl, an antidepressant classified as a selective inhibitor of catecholamine (noradrenaline and dopamine) reuptake. Unlike many antidepressants, it has minimal effect on serotonin reuptake and does not inhibit monoamine oxidase. Its exact mechanism in treating depression is not fully known, but it is believed to work through noradrenergic and dopaminergic activity, improving mood, motivation, and energy.
Indication
-
Treatment of major depressive episodes.
-
May also be used in some cases for other mood disorders, as determined by a physician.
How it Works
Bupropion enhances dopamine and noradrenaline activity in the brain, which helps regulate mood and emotions. This makes it effective in reducing symptoms of depression such as low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, and poor concentration.
Dosage
-
Bupropion HCl (SR 75mg) – dose as prescribed by a doctor.
-
Taken orally, usually once or twice daily depending on the treatment plan.
-
Do not exceed the recommended dose, as higher doses increase the risk of seizures.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
-
Agitation, anxiety, or restlessness.
-
Insomnia or sleep disturbances.
-
Dry mouth, nausea, or constipation.
-
Headache or migraine.
-
Dizziness or tremor.
-
Taste disturbances and difficulty concentrating.
Seek medical attention if severe mood changes, allergic reactions, or unusual symptoms occur.
Drug Interactions
Bupropion may interact with:
-
CYP2B6 inhibitors/inducers (e.g., orphenadrine, cyclophosphamide, ticlopidine, clopidogrel).
-
SSRIs & tricyclic antidepressants (paroxetine, sertraline, nortriptyline, imipramine).
-
Antipsychotics (haloperidol, risperidone, thioridazine).
-
Beta-blockers & antiarrhythmics (metoprolol, flecainide, propafenone).
-
MAO inhibitors (contraindicated – must not be used together).
-
Levodopa & Amantadine.
-
Theophylline, systemic steroids.
-
Alcohol (increases risk of seizures and side effects).
When Not to Use
Zylexx SR should not be used in patients with:
-
Hypersensitivity to Bupropion or its excipients.
-
Current or past seizure disorder.
-
CNS tumor (due to seizure risk).
-
Recent discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or antiepileptic drugs.
Precautions
-
Monitor closely for worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual behavioral changes, especially during initial months or dose adjustments.
-
Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.
-
Should be discontinued if hypersensitivity reactions occur.
Warnings
-
Seizure Risk: Dose should never be exceeded, as the risk of seizure is dose-dependent.
-
Hypersensitivity: Stop immediately if allergic reactions develop.
-
Cardiac Caution: Use with care in patients with cardiovascular disease.
Pregnancy & Lactation
-
Pregnancy Category: Consult your doctor before use.
-
Use only if clearly prescribed by a physician.
Storage
-
Store at room temperature.
-
Keep away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
-
Keep out of reach of children.
Doctor’s Review
Dr. Sara Malik, Consultant Psychiatrist:
“Bupropion (Zylexx SR) is an effective antidepressant for patients with major depression, particularly those with low energy or motivation. It works differently from SSRIs and can help patients who do not respond to other treatments. Careful monitoring is required due to the risk of insomnia, agitation, and seizures at higher doses.”
